DIG IT: Design It Green Interactive Tour for Youth

Introduce your students to the cutting-edge field of green building and sustainable design at NEXUS. The NEXUS Green Building Resource Center is a unique vehicle for engaging youth and educators because it offers interactive learning spaces, inspires critical thinking, and invites hands-on exploration of environmentally sensitive living, planning, design and construction.

Bring your 4th-12th grade class to NEXUS for an interactive field trip in an innovative green building space today! Through NEXUS’ Youth Design It Green Program (Youth DIG) our experienced staff will tailor curriculum to be age-appropriate while providing tangible, interactive and real-world examples that build skills and foster environmental leadership. Our program will target mindset change using the tools of group discussion, deductive reasoning, model building, technological demonstration, and hands-on interaction with actual materials and intellectual challenges.

A standard 1.5 hour Youth DIG Field Trip includes:

1. An introduction to green building using books, models, visuals, and a group discussion.

2. An art project demonstrating the integrated design process used by many green building professionals.

3. A hands-on look at some green building materials from the NEXUS Samples Library.

4. A tour of the green products and strategies in the NEXUS showroom.

Green building is a multi-disciplinary topic, and can support science and energy studies, social studies, and environmental learning standards. By the end of their visit, students will have an understanding of the basic vocabulary and principles of green building and green living.

Testimonials

“They especially enjoyed being able to see some green materials hands on. It made this idea of “green buildings” a more concrete concept for them.” – Cambridge Team GreenSense

“The students were fascinated by everything, from the space itself to the wealth of materials and techniques you display and research.  Annie gave an excellent overview of green building and Nexus's/the Green Roundtable's role; Brian provided a great activity so the students could explore the materials.” - Brandeis University
