NEXUS Internships
NEXUS offers unpaid internships to higher education students and adults interested in green building and environmental sustainability. We ask for a commitment of 16-20 hours per week (flexible schedule) for at least two and preferably three months. NEXUS is currently looking for interns to join us for the Fall 2010 - September through December/January.
Applications for the Fall internship are closed, EXCEPT for applicants interested in the Digital Communications and Website position.
Applications will be accepted through September 8th for the Digital Communications and Website position.
NEXUS Interns have done important work in the world of sustainable building and beyond, including working for organizations such as: Urban Green Council (USGBC NYC), Boreal Renewables, Heatspring Learning Institute, SMMA Architects, Quincy Community Action Programs, Equal Exchange and Sustainable Endowments Institute, as well as graduate programs at Harvard University, Tufts University, University of Colorado and others.

About the Internship
NEXUS interns are instrumental in helping to develop educational, technical and marketing resources for our audiences of building professionals and the general public interested in green building and sustainable design. Interns have unique roles based on their position and some of the responsibilities could include working on NEXUS’ resource center offerings, including the samples library and reference library; marketing materials; social media sites; our website; special programs and events. All interns will be responsible for ongoing tasks including helping to staff the resource center, assisting with events, and various administrative tasks. In exchange, interns will be given opportunities to expand their knowledge of the rapidly growing green building industry, network with industry professionals, attend educational and training sessions, and gain valuable professional experiences and skills to add to their resume.

We cannot guarantee that candidates will be assigned to their first choice internship area. However, we will make every effort to match candidates with projects according to the unique skills and experiences that they will bring to NEXUS. NEXUS Internships - Fall 2010
Materials and Resources Intern
The Materials and Resources Intern will work closely with the Resource Coordinator to improve, expand, and organize the green building resources and associated systems at NEXUS.
Projects may include:
• Help Desk: Research green building questions from the public, and promptly relay answers via e-mail and phone;
• Samples Library: Soliciting new product samples, books and other materials for inclusion in the NEXUS libraries. Intake and labeling of materials and products in the samples library in line with green criteria. Maintenance and development of samples database. Ongoing organization and improvement of the samples and resource libraries to make them more inviting and user-friendly resources;
• Maintaining LEED Resources area;
• Developing educational information and fact sheets for events, web pages, and exhibits.
• Ongoing maintenance of web-based NEXUS Green Service Provider Directory;
• Visitor Relations: Maintaining visitor data, tracking, and feedback system; following up with visitors to collect information on their experience at NEXUS and identify areas of improvement. Creating reports and analyzing visitor data to inform future projects, grants, and program development;
• Maintaining high quality constituent, product, and resource data in CiviCRM database;
• Conducting Internet research to support the development of new programs and initiatives at NEXUS.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including professional phone manner, with experience in customer service preferred.
Highly organized and detail-oriented.
Knowledge of or strong interest in research, information systems, and/or green building materials and strategies.
Fluency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel. Familiarity with Outlook and Access, CiviCRM, or other database a plus. Experience with graphic design or layout preferred but not required. Self-motivated and ability to take initiative and work independently. Passion for green building and sustainability.
Marketing and Design Intern
The Marketing and Design Intern will work closely with the NEXUS Marketing Manager to message, design and communicate compelling marketing collateral to increase participation in NEXUS programs and services.
Projects may include:
• Craft messaging to inform the public of news, success stories and measurable accomplishments (e.g. profile the amount of carbon offset from a project). Includes helping write newsletter editorial as needed;
• Contribute to branding and language for new marketing materials;
• Building targeted lists and databases, including mailing list, In the News, marketing list, and others;
• Calling, flyering and other direct marketing for NEXUS events;
• Tracking and evaluating the results of current marketing strategies;
• Development and coordination of press releases, flyers and other direct marketing material templates for events, trade shows and at NEXUS;
• Assisting with development of interactive, educational building envelope, LEED, and clean energy exhibits at NEXUS;
• Graphic design and interpretive signage for exhibits and resources at NEXUS;
• Development of icons and graphics for NEXUS website, marketing materials, and newsletter;
• The Marketing and Design Intern will work closely with the Digital Communications and Website Intern. Projects may overlap or be transferred between interns depending on skills and experience.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience in customer service.
Highly organized and detail-oriented.
Knowledge of or strong interest in graphic design, exhibit design and/or psychology of behavioral choices and change.
A strong eye for design and an understanding of how people learn through graphics, an exhibit or website.
Fluency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel. Familiarity with Outlook and Access, CiviCRM, or other database a plus.
Experience with at least one graphic design program required, Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
Self-motivated and ability to take initiative and work independently.
Passion for green building and sustainability.
Digital Communications and Website Intern
The Digital Communications and Website Intern will work closely with the NEXUS Marketing Mangager and the Marketing and Design Intern to create and revise compelling digital communications to increase visibility of NEXUS and connect to diverse stakeholders.
Projects may include:
• Newsletter: Format and write content for monthly e-newsletter and monthly events mailer using CiviMail or Constant Cotnact;
• General website development and updates, including formatting and posting website calendar content and news with web-based Content Management System (Drupal), and through social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Blogs);
• Enhancing website with new content, news, photos, etc.;
• Developing systems for reporting on website use;
• Creation of new pages for showcasing NEXUS resources, including GPA member companies and partners, exhibits, green building basics, and online green building product database;
• The Digital Communications and Website Intern will work closely with the Marketing and Design Intern. Projects may overlap or be transferred between interns depending on skills and experience.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience in customer service preferred.
Fluency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel. Familiarity with Outlook and Access, CiviCRM, or other database a plus.
Basic knowledge of web-based Content Management Systems and experience building, maintaining, or adding content to a website required.
General knowledge of systems hardware and back-end infrastructure, and/or HTML a plus;
Specific knowledge of Drupal, CiviCRM, and other web/communication technology used by nonprofits highly desired.
Experience with graphic design and/or layout, experience with Publisher, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar programs.
Interest and ability to learn the vocabulary of green building.
Excellent Internet research skills.
Passion for green building and sustainability.
Preference will be given to individuals with professional or academic experience in website maintenance.
Events and Education Intern
The Events and Education Intern will work closely with the NEXUS Marketing Manager and NEXUS Resource Coordinator to strengthen the events program. This intern will help to build organizational partner relationships, and coordinate the day to day aspects of events and trainings at NEXUS, and improve internal protocols and processes for all event-related operations.
Projects may include:
• Day to day coordination of events, including registration, sign-in, development and printing of course materials, publicizing events on website calendar, responding to attendee inquiries, day-before/follow-up communication with presenters and attendees, and other tasks as needed to help events run smoothly;
• Assist with coordinating event rental requests and bookings;
• Coordinating special events for exhibitors and sponsors;
• Develop and implement event and tradeshow staffing training for other interns with support of NEXUS staff;
• Conduct market research on other educational institutions as related to NEXUS educational programming;
• Coordinate monthly event and tradeshow schedule assignments;
• Improve internal event protocols for NEXUS Handbook.
Skills and Experience:
Personable and outgoing, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience in customer service strongly preferred.
Experience with coordination of events, trainings, or other logistics-intensive programs.
Experience with website maintenance and Internet research.
Fluency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Familiarity with Access, CiviCRM, or other database a plus.
Interest and ability to learn the vocabulary of green building and passion for sustainability.
Comfortable working with diverse stakeholders including manufacturers, design professionals, consultants, and the general public.
Technical Assistance Intern
The Technical Assistance Intern will work closely with Technical Assistance staff to enhance our standard green building deliverables, collect past project data, and work on specific project-related tasks.
Projects may include:
• Update database of past projects, LEED documentation and scorecards;
• Research for Emerging Technologies Database;
• Enhance Sustainable Strategies Catalogue;
• Assist in development of marketing materials;
• Research recycled and regional material content from various manufacturers;
• Update database of low-VOC paints, coatings, adhesives & sealants;
• Help develop an Innovation Credit Catalogue;
• Support Project Managers in developing LEED credit documentation;
• Market Research on current programs.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience in customer service preferred.
Fluency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Familiarity with AutoCAD, Sketchup, and Photoshop or other design software.
Interest and ability to learn the vocabulary of green building and strong passion for sustainability.
Knowledge of / interest in the field of architecture or engineering highly desired.
Program Development Intern
GRT recently launched two new programs, Green Firm Certification for design and construction firms, and Green Products Association. The Program Development Intern will work closely with the Director of New Business Development on these and other initiatives.
Projects may include:
• Create, edit or format manuals, collateral, and protocols related to program offerings;
• Assist in development of marketing materials for broad distribution to product manufacturers and design firms;
• Research and outreach to solicit new participants, field inquiries, and follow up by phone and/or email;
• Attend trade shows to represent NEXUS and publicize new program offerings;
• Assist in creating structure and systems for program-related tasks;
• Assisting with development of interactive, educational exhibits at NEXUS with participating manufacturers and other partner organizations (in collaboration with the NEXUS Marketing and Design Intern);
• Coordinating special events for exhibitors and sponsors.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience in customer service preferred. Experience and comfort level with research.
Fluency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Experience in business development, entrepreneurship and/or small business start-up.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Interest and ability to learn the vocabulary of green building and strong passion for sustainability.
Knowledge of the architecture, engineering or building products industries.
Ability to work independently and take initiative.
